How to Make a Flower Arrangement

There are certainly days I miss working as a florist – especially this time of year when there are so many beautiful blooms! Flowers are a classic way to brighten someone’s day, but they can come with a hefty price tag. When purchasing a pre-arranged bouquet, a large chunk of your dollars go towards the cost of labor. A bit of planning and some diy spirit can save you a lot of cash!

Here’s a few tips on how to make a professional-looking flower arrangement yourself. The cost of flowers in this arrangement was $20. In a floral shop, the cost for the same bouquet could range from $30-$45.

DIY Flower arrangement ingredients.

Steps

1. Fill your container half-way with water at room temperature and add flower food.

2. Clean your stems by carefully removing any thorns and base leaves. If leaves are below the water line, they will rot and give the water a dirty appearance.

3. Start by greening your vase. Greenery is key – it’s what will make your arrangement look full and shapely.  I typically start with 6-8 stems of fern.

4. Next, use one of your feature flowers to determine the height of your arrangement. One trick is to hold the flower up to the outside of the vase to measure before snipping. Be sure to cut stems at an angle, and always place in water immediately after cutting.

5. Begin adding accent flowers. Depending on the flowers, 3-4 small bouquets can yield a nice, full arrangement. I absolutely love alstroemeria, also known as peruvian lilies, because they’re inexpensive and can last well over a week. They’re make a perfect filler flower as they take up space and add gorgeous, vibrant color.
