It is amazing how the ambiance of a room can affect your mood, productivity, and mindset. The atmosphere around you shapes your thoughts and perspective.
I’m a true homebody. As I make my house a home, I strive to create a space where I enjoy spending time. When a good portion of your life is spent in a certain place, why not make an effort to design it in a way that helps you feel empowered and rejuvenated?
First and foremost, an essential piece of creating an atmosphere you love is picking the right wall color. This sets the tone of the entire space.
When I moved into my home, everything about it was perfect; aside from one small detail in the master bedroom.
Enter: mint green misery.
While I do enjoy a small pop of color here and there, I prefer all neutral everything most of the time. The vibe of this room made me feel unsettled and stressed.
I partnered with KILZ to completely revamp this space. The results have been nothing short of a life changer.
I believe the space in which you start and end each day should help you unwind and recharge. My goal for the room makeover was to create a place that would convey a sense of peace.
Selecting a paint color can be daunting task; but it doesn’t have to be! Simply choose an inspiration piece you love and feel confident about. Once you have this key element, you’re then able to work on the color palette.
In this space, the bedding was the piece I used as a foundation. It inspired me to design an earthy, boho bedroom escape.
The color I chose is called KILZ Complete Coat® Coffee House. This was absolutely perfect as my home decor has a lot of greige, and Coffee House is brown with a gray undertone. KILZ has SO many delicious neutral color options. (You can view them here!) I picked up several paint swatches from Walmart and brought them home to see how they looked with the bedding before diving in. It’s also important to see how the colors look in natural light at different times of day.
The friendly paint clerk let me me know the Satin finish works best for bedrooms and hallways since it’s durable and easy to clean, and Semi-Gloss works best for bathrooms since it hardens to a nice shell that repels water.
KILZ Complete Coat is a paint + primer in one. KILZ paint products can be found on Amazon or at your local Walmart. Two coats of paint is all it took to cover the green.
After prepping the space and taping off the trim, we had the walls covered in about 90 minutes with two people painting.
Tip: If you happen to spill paint on something you didn’t intend to, some hot, soapy water will take it right off. Keep a bucket of this handy as you work.
With the walls finished, the next step to creating an earthy, boho atmosphere was to add the decor!
A few highlights:
- Layered Pillows
- I layered 24 inch, 18 inch, 15 x 27 inch pillows to create depth.
- DIY Yarn Art
- I found this project here. It was an easy and inexpensive way to create a statement piece that ties all of the colors in the room together. I got the stick from my mom’s tree, and I just love how it turned out!
- DIY Memo Board
- You can find the tutorial for this frame here. I switched up the prints to feature some vintage postcards. The black, white, and sepia tones complement the color scheme well.
- Gallery Wall
- Since this collage sits right above my writing desk, I included a mini cork board, a few art pieces, and some air plants.
- Mirror
- Mirrors are one of my favorite decor pieces; they make the room feel larger, and they’re beautiful!
- PLANTS
- Of course.
If you’re looking for a fresh start, or if you’re just ready for a change, consider painting your room or refurbishing an old piece of furniture.
This room truly feels brand new, and it all started with a fresh coat of paint.
….next up: the bathroom and the kitchen.

Beautiful photographs!! I really like your idea of a DIY memo board also, because you can attach cute photos and memories with people onto them :) Your room looks very Tumblr too, almost can’t believe it.
Your decor is all my Pinterest pins come to life! You’ve done an absolutely beautiful job with your place. I agree, the space that you come to rest to should be relaxing and stimulating towards your personality, and I think you’ve done a beautiful job with your final product.
Best,

I love the look of this bedroom! I’m in the middle of trying to plan out what I want my bedroom to look like. It’s so bare since we moved in. Maybe this is the kind of theme I’m looking for!
